I believe that if you’re in the top 3 of any of the normal live games you’ll win some points (100 maybe? not sure, never won!).
To win big though, you need to be the 1 in a full blown game of 1vs 100. In this game scenario, the 1 is pitted against a mob of 100 and after each question, those with incorrect answers are eliminated. For every 10 mob members the 1 knocks out the available prize fund increases. At each of these stages the 1 has the opportunity to take the money (say 1,000 MS points) or play on in the hope of eliminating the rest of the mob and taking the grand prize of 10,000 MS points. If the 1 is eliminated, the points accumulated are shared between the remaining mob members.
To get into the mob or to be the 1 you need to play it lots though, competitors are randomly selected from pools based on all time high score, weekly score etc.
